How do I get a transcript from a YouTube video in Python?▼

Use the youtube-transcript-api package to fetch transcript segments for a video ID. The fetch_transcript.py script wraps this library, accepting any YouTube URL format and outputting JSON with full text, timestamps, and metadata.

How to summarize a YouTube video without watching it?▼

Fetch the video transcript with the helper script using --text-only --timestamps, then transform the text into a summary, chapters, thread, or blog post. Videos over 50K characters are chunked with overlap and summarized per chunk before merging.

What YouTube URL formats are supported for transcript extraction?▼

The script accepts standard watch URLs, youtu.be short links, shorts, embeds, live links, and raw 11-character video IDs. A regex extracts the video ID from any of these formats automatically.

Why does YouTube transcript fetching fail for some videos?▼

Fetching fails when transcripts are disabled by the video owner, the video is private or unavailable, or no transcript exists in the requested language. Retry without the --language flag to fetch any available transcript.

Can I fetch YouTube transcripts in languages other than English?▼

Yes, pass a comma-separated language list with --language, such as tr,en, to set a fallback chain. If no matching language exists, omit the flag to retrieve whatever transcript is available and note the actual language.
