List every visible element on a screen, identify what each one does, and remove those you cannot justify. Then check for a single focal point, generous whitespace, and a limited palette of colors, typefaces, and type sizes.

Wabi-sabi restraint is the discipline of leaving things out: generous whitespace, few colors and typefaces, no decoration without function, and resistance to feature creep. It is the modesty half of wabi-sabi, complementing the warmth-through-imperfection half.

Restraint becomes harmful when it removes affordances, labels, or contrast that users need to understand the interface. A button with no visible cue or low-contrast text is dysfunction, not elegance; communication must not be sacrificed for aesthetics.

The checklist recommends 5-7 colors with clear semantic roles, 2-3 typefaces or weights of one, 5-8 type sizes on a clear scale, and consolidated shadow levels, corner radii, and animation timings.

Combine restraint in functional chrome with selective warmth in emotional moments, such as hand-drawn illustrations or warm color accents. Pure restraint without warmth reads as cold or sterile, so calibrate based on the product's purpose and audience.
