Add small deliberate imperfections within an otherwise disciplined design, such as one off-grid element, hand-drawn illustrations, or organic textures. The imperfection must be intentional, refined, and coherent so it reads as character rather than a rendering bug.

Wabi-sabi in UI design is the aesthetic of intentional imperfection and restraint, using subtle asymmetry, visible craft cues, and organic textures to create warmth. It draws on the Japanese aesthetic philosophy valuing irregularity and impermanence.

Avoid imperfection in functional UI like buttons, forms, and navigation, as well as data displays, critical-action interfaces, enterprise contexts, and accessibility-critical surfaces. These contexts benefit from precision, and irregularity there reads as broken.

Humanist serifs like Charter, Source Serif, IBM Plex Serif, Garamond, and Caslon add warmth through subtle character variation. For sans-serifs, Inter, Open Sans, Source Sans 3, and Atkinson Hyperlegible offer softer warmth than geometric typefaces.

It can if applied carelessly: hand-drawn typography may reduce legibility, organic textures can lower text contrast, and asymmetric layouts may confuse screen readers. Test contrast and reading order, and keep accessibility-critical surfaces precise.

Designed imperfection is intentional, refined within its irregularity, selectively applied, and coherent in register. Sloppy design is accidental, uncrafted, uniformly low quality, and inconsistent. If viewers cannot tell whether an irregularity was meant, it is not yet designed.
