What problem does it solve?

This skill enables teams to deploy VS Code in air-gapped environments by building a reproducible offline kit that includes desktop installers for Windows/macOS/Linux, a headless VS Code Server/cache for Remote-SSH, and pinned VSIX extensions for both client and server sides to ensure offline operation.

Core Features & Use Cases

  • Offline client installers: package and pre-pin VS Code clients per OS to support offline deployment.
  • Headless server cache: pre-place VS Code Server and CLI artifacts so Remote-SSH can connect without internet.
  • Offline extensions: download and stage local (client/UI) and remote (server) VSIX extensions for immediate installation.
  • Use Case: replicate a host's VS Code setup on a developer machine without internet, guaranteeing identical versions and extensions.

Quick Start

  • Gather target CHANNEL, VERSION (optional), and COMMIT from the host or choose a mirrored workflow.
  • Download commit-pinned client installers to clients/ per OS.
  • Download commit-pinned server + CLI tarballs to server/ and stage extensions to extensions/local/ and extensions/remote/.
  • Run WAN prep scripts to discover, download, and export kit metadata, then generate a ready-to-use kit for air-gapped deployment.
