What problem does it solve? Setting up an AI-assisted web-novel writing environment requires manually installing hooks, rules, agent definitions, and configuration files across different AI coding tools, which is error-prone and risks overwriting existing user configuration. ## Core Features & Use Cases - Multi-CLI Deployment: Detects or prompts for the target CLI (Claude Code, OpenCode, Codex, OpenClaw) and deploys the matching hooks, agents, commands, and AGENTS.md/CLAUDE.md templates. - Non-Destructive Merging: Merges CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, settings.local.json, opencode.json, and Codex hooks.json by marker/section or command deduplication instead of overwriting user configuration. - Agent Model Configuration: Detects available OpenCode models via opencode models --verbose, tiers them by cost or keyword heuristics, and writes per-agent model: fields after interactive selection. - Versioned Upgrades: Tracks deployment state in a .story-deployed sentinel file and guides re-deployment through UPGRADING.md version history. - Use Case: A novelist starting a new long-form project runs the setup once to install outline guards, prose-quality hooks, and seven writing agents, then opens a new session and begins writing with /story-long-write. ## Quick Start Ask the AI to run /story-setup in your writing project directory and choose your target CLI when prompted.

Frequently Asked Questions about story-setup

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema
How do I set up an AI writing environment for web novels?▼

Run the story-setup skill in your project directory. It detects or asks for your target CLI, then deploys hooks, rules, agent definitions, and CLAUDE.md or AGENTS.md templates, finishing with a validation report and restart instructions.

Does story-setup support OpenCode, Codex, and OpenClaw?▼

Yes, it supports Claude Code, OpenCode, Codex, and OpenClaw, including multi-CLI combinations. Each target gets its own artifacts: OpenCode receives agents, a plugin, and commands; Codex receives TOML agents and hooks.json; OpenClaw receives skills-only deployment.

Will redeploying overwrite my existing CLAUDE.md or settings?▼

No. User-owned files like CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, and settings.local.json are merged by marker or section, and hooks are deduplicated by command. Only story-setup managed files such as hooks, rules, and agents are replaced.

Why are my custom agents unavailable right after deployment?▼

Claude Code and Codex register custom agents only at session start, so newly deployed agents are invisible in the current session. Start a new session; otherwise agent-spawning skills fall back to solo mode.

How does story-setup configure models for OpenCode agents?▼

It runs `opencode models --verbose` to list models, tiers them by cost or keyword heuristics into low, mid, and high tiers, then asks you to pick per tier and writes the chosen `model:` field into each agent file. Existing model settings are cached and restored if detection fails.

How do I upgrade an older story-setup deployment?▼

Re-run the skill in the project. It reads the `.story-deployed` sentinel, compares `agents_version` against the current version 16, and redeploys managed files while merging user-owned configuration, following the version notes in UPGRADING.md.
