SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

What problem does it solve? Teams argue about features before agreeing on what progress the customer is actually trying to make, and discovery notes often collapse into feature lists that go stale with every roadmap change. This Skill runs a structured Jobs-to-be-Done exercise that separates the stable customer job from the churning solution. ## Core Features & Use Cases - Job statement and job story: Writes Ulwick's verb-object-clarifier main job plus a situational job story, then validates both with solution-swap and stability checks. - Full JTBD canvas: Captures functional, emotional, and social job dimensions, the four forces of progress (push, pull, habit, anxiety), pains and gains, and measurable desired outcome statements rated on importance and satisfaction. - Facilitated discovery loop: Asks up to four targeted questions with context-aware options, collapses to zero questions when transcripts or a proto-persona arrive upstream, and labels every claim as Fact, Inference, or Assumption. - Use Case: A product team scoping a self-service dispute flow pastes three support call transcripts; the Skill extracts the functional job and pains, identifies the missing anxiety column, asks one targeted question to fill it, and emits a JTBD.md canvas ready to feed a problem statement or opportunity solution tree. ## Quick Start Run the jobs-to-be-done skill to build a JTBD canvas for our target persona using these interview notes and tell me which assumptions still need validation.

FAQPage Schema
How do I write a jobs-to-be-done statement for a product?▼

Write a main job as verb plus object plus contextual clarifier, then a job story in the form 'When situation, I want motivation, so I can expected outcome.' Validate it with a solution-swap check and a stability check so the statement survives any specific product.

What are the four forces of progress in JTBD?▼

The four forces are push of the situation and pull of the new solution, which drive change, and habit of the present and anxiety of the new, which resist it. Switching happens only when push plus pull exceed habit plus anxiety, so all four must be recorded.

What is the difference between a persona and a job to be done?▼

A persona describes who the customer is, while a job describes what progress they are trying to make in a specific circumstance. The same person has different jobs on different days, so jobs group circumstances rather than people.

Can I run a JTBD analysis without customer interviews?▼

Yes, the facilitation loop collapses when transcripts, tickets, or an upstream proto-persona are provided, populating the canvas from that evidence. Unevidenced items such as emotional jobs and ratings are labeled as assumptions with validation tests.

Why do JTBD canvases fail or go stale?▼

Canvases fail when the job is written at solution altitude so only one product fits it, when emotional jobs are invented without evidence, or when pains describe missing product features. The stability check and customer-world pain phrasing prevent this.
