What problem does it solve?

This skill provides a hands-on, visual way to understand algebraic expressions and the zero principle, making abstract concepts like combining like terms and additive inverses tangible for students.

Core Features & Use Cases

  • Drag & Drop Tiles: Students can drag 'x', '-x', '1', and '-1' tiles from a palette onto a workspace.
  • Automatic Cancellation: Opposite tiles (e.g., 'x' and '-x') automatically cancel each other out when brought close, turning grey and simplifying the expression.
  • Use Case: A student can model the expression "2x - 3 + x + 1" by dragging tiles. As they arrange them, the skill automatically cancels out pairs like '1' and '-1', helping them visually arrive at the simplified expression "3x - 2".

Quick Start

Use the Implement Algebra Tiles skill to create an interactive workspace. Allow students to drag 'x', '-x', '1', and '-1' tiles to model the expression "3x - 2 + (-x) + 4" and observe the automatic cancellations.
