What problem does it solve?
GDAL API unifies access to 200+ raster and 100+ vector formats and simplifies programmatic reading, writing, transformation, and analysis of geospatial datasets across languages, removing the friction of format incompatibility, reprojection mistakes, and low-level I/O handling.
Core Features & Use Cases
- Read and write common raster formats (GeoTIFF, COG, netCDF) and vector formats (Shapefile, GeoJSON, GeoPackage) with language bindings in C++, Python, Java, and C#.
- Perform coordinate reference system management and accurate reprojection using PROJ, warp and resample rasters, and execute raster analytics and vector geometry operations (buffer, intersection, union).
- Use cases include converting imagery between formats and CRSs, extracting raster bands to NumPy arrays for analysis, automating vector attribute edits and spatial filtering, and producing GeoPackage datasets for downstream GIS apps.
