Creative Portfolio Resume

Create two versions: an ATS-compatible version with single-column layout, standard fonts, and no graphics for online applications, and a designed version for networking and portfolio use. The ATS version can still show creativity through typography hierarchy, white space, and strong copywriting.

ATS-safe elements include custom professional fonts, strategic bold and italic, simple line dividers, consistent spacing, sparing color in headers, and hyperlinks to portfolios. Avoid multiple columns, text boxes, images, icons, tables for layout, and graphics or skill bars.

Use the designed version for networking events, direct emails to hiring managers, portfolio websites, in-person interviews, and creative agencies expecting visual resumes. Use the ATS version whenever applying through online portals or when unsure how the resume will be processed.

Adobe InDesign is best for layout, Figma works well for web-native design, and Illustrator handles vector-based work. Canva and Google Docs are simpler options. Avoid PowerPoint, Keynote, and heavy template builders that obscure content.

Add a portfolio URL near your contact information and link specific accomplishments to case studies, such as appending a case study URL under a relevant bullet point. On your portfolio site, offer a PDF download of the designed resume and keep it synchronized with your main resume.
