SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

💡 This Skill includes references (resource) and assets (resource) components.

What problem does it solve? When starting a business process improvement initiative, teams often pick the wrong process to analyze — the loudest stakeholder's favorite, the most recent incident, or the most visible one. This Skill runs the Identify phase of Business Process Analysis (BPA), producing a data-driven, prioritized Process Inventory that justifies which process deserves analysis first. ## Core Features & Use Cases - Stakeholder Discovery: Structured guidance for interviewing process owners, executors, and internal/external customers to inventory candidate processes. - Priority Score Calculation: A weighted scoring formula combining frequency, volume, pain level, and strategic impact, with normalization rules and interpretation thresholds. - Process Selection & Scoping: Templates to define the selected process's trigger, output, customer, and boundaries before mapping begins. - Use Case: An operations team suspects inefficiency across five processes. Use this Skill to interview stakeholders, score each process, and produce a validated Process Inventory selecting the highest-impact process for detailed mapping. ## Quick Start Ask the assistant to run bpa:identify for your business area to build a prioritized Process Inventory and select the process to analyze next.

Frequently Asked Questions about bpa-identify

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema
How do I prioritize which business process to analyze first?▼

Score each candidate process using a weighted Priority Score: frequency (20%), normalized volume (20%), pain level (30%), and strategic impact (30%). Processes scoring 4.0 or higher are high priority and should be analyzed in the current initiative.

What is a Process Inventory in business process analysis?▼

A Process Inventory is a structured list of all processes in a business area, each with its owner, frequency, volume, pain level, and strategic impact. It is the deliverable of the BPA Identify phase and authorizes selecting one process for detailed mapping.

How do I normalize volume data when scoring processes?▼

Divide each process's daily transaction volume by the maximum volume in the set and multiply by 5. For example, 200 transactions per day against a maximum of 400 yields a normalized score of 2.5.

When should I skip the process identification step?▼

Skip it when the process to analyze is already identified and agreed upon with stakeholders — go directly to process mapping. Also skip it for purely technical improvements without a business process component, where PDCA or DMAIC fits better.

What if there is no volume data available for prioritization?▼

Use ranged estimates from the executing team, such as 30-50 transactions per day, and document the uncertainty. Estimates are sufficient for prioritization; statistical precision is not required.

What are the limitations of process scoring for prioritization?▼

The scoring formula is a facilitation tool, not an exact formula, and weights can be adjusted to organizational context. A high-scoring process whose owner lacks mandate to change is a risk that must be documented before proceeding.
