SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

💡 This Skill includes references (resource) components.

What problem does it solve? Finding and inventorying Azure resources across multiple subscriptions and resource groups is slow with the portal or per-service CLI commands, especially for resource types without dedicated tooling. This Skill generates and runs Azure Resource Graph KQL queries to list, filter, and audit resources at scale. ## Core Features & Use Cases - Cross-Subscription Resource Inventory: List VMs, web apps, storage accounts, container apps, and any other resource type across all subscriptions with a single KQL query. - Orphaned Resource Discovery: Find unattached managed disks, unused public IPs, orphaned NICs, and idle load balancers that waste budget. - Tag & Compliance Audits: Identify resources missing required tags, check tag coverage by type, and detect resources with public network access enabled. - Use Case: Ask "show me all container apps in my subscription" and the Skill routes to a dedicated MCP tool if one exists, or generates an az graph query KQL command, executes it, and formats the results as a table. ## Quick Start Ask the assistant to list all virtual machines across your subscriptions and it will generate and run the appropriate Azure Resource Graph query.

Frequently Asked Questions about azure-resource-lookup

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema
How do I list all Azure resources across multiple subscriptions?▼

Use Azure Resource Graph with the command az graph query -q "Resources | summarize count() by type" to query all subscriptions at once. Add the --subscriptions flag to scope results or --first N to limit output size.

How to find unattached disks and orphaned Azure resources?▼

Query the Resources table filtering by type microsoft.compute/disks where managedBy is empty to find unattached disks. Similar KQL patterns exist for unused public IPs, orphaned NICs, and idle load balancers.

When should I use Azure Resource Graph instead of dedicated MCP tools?▼

Use dedicated MCP tools like compute, storage, or aks for single-resource-type queries when they offer full coverage. Use Resource Graph for cross-subscription queries, resource types without MCP tools like Container Apps, and tag or compliance audits.

Why does my Azure Resource Graph query return AuthorizationFailed?▼

AuthorizationFailed means your account lacks read access to the target subscriptions. You need at least the Reader RBAC role on each subscription you query, and the resource-graph CLI extension must be installed.

Can Azure Resource Graph modify or deploy resources?▼

No, Azure Resource Graph is strictly read-only and cannot create, update, or delete resources. It also has slight data latency, so it should not be used for real-time monitoring or mutation workflows.
