SYSTEM DOCUMENTATION & REQUIREMENTS

💡 This Skill includes references (resource) components.

What problem does it solve? Setting up AWS CI/CD pipelines involves coordinating five services with non-obvious failure modes: connections stuck in PENDING state, builds hanging silently in VPCs without NAT gateways, and cross-account deployments failing with cryptic Access Denied errors. This Skill provides the exact configurations, IAM policies, and troubleshooting steps to get pipelines working correctly. ## Core Features & Use Cases - Pipeline Orchestration: Create CodePipeline V2 pipelines with triggers, variables, execution modes (QUEUED, PARALLEL, SUPERSEDED), and manual approval gates. - Build & Deploy Configuration: Write buildspec.yml files with caching, VPC, and Docker support, plus CodeDeploy strategies including blue/green, canary, and linear for EC2, ECS, and Lambda. - Source & Package Management: Connect GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket via CodeConnections and set up CodeArtifact private package registries with auth tokens and cross-account access. - Use Case: You need a pipeline that builds a Docker image from a GitHub repo and deploys it to ECS with canary traffic shifting across two AWS accounts. This Skill walks you through the connection OAuth flow, the three-part cross-account setup (KMS key policy, S3 bucket policy, cross-account role), and the CodeDeploy ECS configuration. ## Quick Start Ask the assistant to create a CodePipeline V2 pipeline that builds from a GitHub repository and deploys to ECS using blue/green deployment.

Frequently Asked Questions about aws-deployment

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema
How do I create a CodePipeline V2 pipeline with GitHub source?▼

Create a CodeConnections connection to GitHub, complete the OAuth handshake in the AWS Console, then define a V2 pipeline with a CodeStarSourceConnection source action referencing the connection ARN and FullRepositoryId in org/repo format. Add CodeBuild and CodeDeploy actions for build and deploy stages.

Why is my CodeConnections connection stuck in PENDING status?▼

Connections created via CLI, CloudFormation, or CDK always start as PENDING and require a manual OAuth handshake in the AWS Console. There is no API-only path to authorization. Go to Developer Tools > Settings > Connections and complete the provider authorization flow.

Why does my CodeBuild build hang in a VPC?▼

CodeBuild cannot assign public IPs in a VPC, so builds in private subnets without a NAT gateway hang silently at DOWNLOAD_SOURCE or dependency install. Add a NAT gateway to the subnet route table or configure VPC endpoints for S3 and CloudWatch Logs.

What is required for cross-account CodePipeline deployments?▼

Cross-account deployments require all three of: a customer-managed KMS key policy granting the target account (use key ID, not alias), an S3 bucket policy allowing the target account role, and a cross-account IAM role with a trust policy. Missing any one causes cryptic Access Denied errors.

How do I fix ApplicationStop failures blocking CodeDeploy deployments?▼

ApplicationStop runs the previous revision's stop script, so a broken script blocks all future deployments. Make stop scripts idempotent (exit 0 if the service is absent), deploy a fix-only revision, or unblock with the --ignore-application-stop-failures flag.

When should I not use this AWS CI/CD approach?▼

Use aws-cdk for CDK Pipelines and cdk deploy, aws-serverless for sam deploy, aws-containers for ECS service deployment configuration like circuit breakers, and aws-amplify for Amplify deployments. GitHub Actions and GitLab CI are third-party tools not covered here.
