What problem does it solve? Running EC2 workloads involves dozens of decisions and failure modes — instance-type selection, launch templates, Auto Scaling health checks, IMDSv2 configuration, burstable credit costs, and SSH/connectivity failures — where small misconfigurations cause silent cost leaks or fleets that never heal themselves. ## Core Features & Use Cases - Instance Selection & Provisioning: Choose instance families (Graviton/Arm64, burstable T, GPU, instance store vs EBS) and codify them in versioned launch templates with IMDSv2, user data, placement groups, and Elastic IPs. - Auto Scaling Operations: Build self-healing ASGs with ELB health checks, target-tracking policies, instance refresh, mixed instances/Spot, warm pools, and lifecycle hooks. - Fleet Management & Troubleshooting: Use Systems Manager (Session Manager, Run Command, Patch Manager) for keyless access, manage AMI lifecycle and cross-account sharing, and diagnose capacity errors, status-check failures, and connectivity issues. - Use Case: Stand up an autoscaling web fleet by creating a launch template with IMDSv2 enforced, attaching it to an ASG with --health-check-type ELB and a target-tracking policy, then rolling out new AMIs via instance refresh. ## Quick Start Ask the assistant to create a launch template and Auto Scaling group for a web application with ELB health checks and target-tracking scaling on CPU.

Frequently Asked Questions about aws-compute

High-intent search queries and answers about installing and using this skill.

FAQPage Schema
How do I create an Auto Scaling group with a launch template?▼

Create a launch template with aws ec2 create-launch-template, then run aws autoscaling create-auto-scaling-group referencing it with min/max size and subnets. Set --health-check-type ELB so load-balancer-unhealthy instances are actually replaced.

Why is my Auto Scaling group not replacing unhealthy instances?▼

ASGs only use EC2 status checks by default, so instances failing the load balancer's health check stay in service. Fix it with aws autoscaling update-auto-scaling-group --health-check-type ELB and an appropriate grace period.

Should I use Graviton or x86 EC2 instances?▼

Use Graviton (Arm64, the g-suffix types like m7g) when your runtime and dependencies support Arm64 — Go, Java, Python, Node, and .NET do — for better price-performance. Stay on x86 for software with x86-only binaries, and note Graviton requires an Arm64 AMI.

Why do containers get 401 errors from the EC2 metadata service?▼

The default IMDSv2 HttpPutResponseHopLimit of 1 prevents the token response from reaching containerized processes. Set HttpPutResponseHopLimit=2 in the launch template's metadata options for bridge or awsvpc container workloads.

What is the difference between InsufficientInstanceCapacity and InstanceLimitExceeded?▼

InsufficientInstanceCapacity means AWS lacks spare capacity of that type in the AZ — retry another AZ or instance type. InstanceLimitExceeded is a vCPU quota you must raise via Service Quotas; a quota increase does nothing for the former.

How do I connect to a private EC2 instance without SSH keys?▼

Use Session Manager: attach an instance profile with AmazonSSMManagedInstanceCore (or enable Default Host Management Configuration) and run aws ssm start-session. Private subnets without NAT need ssm and ssmmessages VPC endpoints.
